The Changing Mind is full of hopeful, optimistic insights about healthy ageing, though I find it to be just as much a book about general health as it is about health in old age. Levitin has written a comprehensive, neuroscientific guide that debunks myths about ageing, tackles ageism by championing a case for elderly people continuing to be treated as valued members of society, and reframes old age as an important life stage rather than a state of purely negative decline. I found his words empowering, exciting, and super interesting – I can’t stop thinking about some of the fascinating research mentioned! I did find that the volume of detail in the book at times veered away from what seemed relevant to the topic at hand, but I am also aware that some may have found this helpful rather than unnecessary. Overall, I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the science of ageing.
