Perry’s book about parenting is insightful, reflective, and practical all at once. Everyone can learn something new, or at least consolidate prior knowledge by reading it. Complex theoretical topics are broken down into easy language, gentle guidance, and useful exercises to put into practice. I found myself nodding in agreement to most of what Perry had to say, and I’d highly recommend The Book You Wish Your Parents Had Read to any expecting, new, or seasoned parents. Although much of the content seemed repetitive at times, I especially appreciated that this book was not written in the form of an unforgiving, militant rulebook, which many parenting books unfortunately take the form of. Perry, on the other hand, is very good at reassuring the reader that though they may have had children long before reading this book, their children are not doomed, and there is always repair – an attitude I find far more compassionate than any books that intend to teach by inducing fear.
