In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts is one of the most impactful books I have read on the topic of addiction. Maté does not shy away from disclosing his own personal experiences with various forms of addiction, as well as describing types of addiction society may not consider to be harmful. I loved the way he brought together his clinical view on the topic with evidence from neuroscience – he provides a thorough examination of the root causes of addiction, and advocates, above all else, for an attitude of compassion. This is an important read for everyone on a healing journey, not just those who consider themselves to be addicted. Maté might open your eyes to all the ways in which you too, may struggle with addictions.
