Address Unknown is a short story written in the form of a correspondence between two business partners and friends before the outbreak of the Second World War. It is a powerful and heartbreaking read that I finished in one sitting; it uses a simple style to convey a profound and shocking message. When it was written, the book exposed the Nazi ideology in ways that surprised the public, and I find that it captures the collective experience of many Jewish people at the time, specifically with regards to the relationships and support they lost. Address Unknown skilfully portrays how individuals with no former radical beliefs ended up being caught up in extreme and dangerous ideologies. A poignant warning for modern times.
For the fact that Address Unknown holds such power, it has a surprisingly low profile – I feel it needs to be talked about more!
