This is a beautiful end-of-life memoir about grief, death, love, hope, and mortality. The reader is inspired to think about their own existential life-and-death conflicts, as well as gaining insight into a journey of loss, and how to cope with such loss. I appreciated the honesty, vulnerability, and self-awareness of the authors – this read is both a personal story and somewhat of a manual on the complexities of living and dying. Irvin Yalom’s struggle to live without his wife after her death is particularly poignant given his experiences of helping others face such struggles during his many years as an esteemed psychotherapist – I found his exploration of this complicated dichotomy fascinating.
